OPTIM® CHEMICALLY MODIFIED POLYOLEFINES

For the first time in India a range of maleated polymeric resins in granular form are being manufactured by PLUSS®, entirely based on indigenously developed technology. These have been found invaluable as additives in compounding and processing applications.

Chemistry of OPTIM®
OPTIM® Polymeric Resins are based on polyolefines and copolymers, like LDPE, LLDPE, ULDPE, HDPE, PP, EVA and EPDM. These base polymers are grafted predominantly with maleic anhydride and other functional groups that impart a degree of polarity to the otherwise nonpolar base polymers. The additional chemical groups provide exceptional compatibility, reactivity and adhesion properties to these resins and cause good affinity towards other polar materials used in blending, compounding, co-extrusion, printing, and lamination.

Higher filler loadings also become possible. In such cases OPTIM® replaces the conventionally used low molecular weight additives like waxes, which have a tendency to plateout and form undesirable die deposits during processing.

In extruded products, OPTIM® provide smoother surface finish. In injection moulded products, the better pigment dispersion and higher flow of the filled compound so achieved make it possible to mould dimensionally stable thin wall parts or parts with a profile of varying thickness.

Applications

OPTIM® modified polymers are based on PEs, PPs, EVA, and EPDM. They act by improving interfacial adhesion between the filler and polymer matrix. Thus, the polar functional groups in OPTIM®, bind with the surface of fillers like calcium carbonate, talc, mica and glass fibres, while the polymer backbone of OPTIM® mixes well with the matrix polymer. This results in a better dispersion of the filler and enhances the mechanical properties of the compound. Maleated Polymers are known to be excellent impact modifiers for filled PP and Nylon compositions.
